Cambria Corporation in Ardmore
In the late 1990s the president of Cambria’s largest client, located in Maryland, asked us to open an office on the east coast to make it easier for his staff to work with us. At the time we were in the midst of the Silicon Valley boom and it was difficult to hire good programmers – the good ones locally all had jobs and those from out of state did not want to move into such an expensive area.
We focused on Philadelphia because as one of the premier educational centers in the USA it was a perfect place to hire talented programmers and designers. Also, the president of Cambria is from Philly and he seized on the choice as giving him frequent opportunities to satisfy his desire for authentic cheese steaks and hoagies.
The choice of 326 W. Lancaster Pike felt just right since it is on the nation’s first national highway and one that runs all the way to the Silicon Valley. Lancaster Pike comprised the first segment of the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road which opened America to the West and South. Later it was the first road in America to be paved with Macadam and in the early 1900s was made part of the Lincoln Highway, later to become the more prosaic US Route 30.
Local politicos with no historic sense have since renamed Lancaster Pike as Lancaster Avenue in their relentless campaign to homogenize our culture and eliminate all that is unusual and interesting. We would have preferred the "Great Philadelphia Wagon Road" if they had to rename it at all.
Interestingly, that client who precipitated our move to Philly never did work with our Philly office. They discovered quickly that the person you work with (in this case in our Palo Alto office) is more important than his location. These days, with the internet, it is so easy to work with anyone in the world that all three of our offices have clients in every part of the country and overseas as well.
